SMETS1 meters are the first-generation smart meters. They work like SMART meters with your installing supplier but may lose “SMART” functions if you switch, operating like a traditional meter until they’re upgraded.

SMETS2 meters are the newer, second-generation type. They use a central national network, so they should stay fully smart even if you change supplier.
